the Rosario Alvarez Scholarship

Rosario Alvarez was born August 24, 1957 in East Harlem, New York and attended Brandeis High School. She was a Spring 1977 initiate of the Magnificent Mu Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and she graduated from Cornell University’s College of Human Ecology in 1979 with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies.

Unfortunately, she passed away in September 1979 shortly after her graduation as result of complications due to hepatitis. She liked music, being around people, having fun, and loved children. Her goal was to become a bilingual educator. The Rosario Alvarez Memorial Scholarship was started in her memory, since she was the first of our chapter to pass away. This scholarship is awarded to high schoolers displaying need and well-rounded academic success!
